This is not a revelation to say that Serge Gainsbourg is one of the most respected french artist in the world. You’ll even find very often one of his album, the pop and timeless Histoire de Melody Nelson, in many Dj & Producers Top 10.
No need to say that most of them have sampled and reworked his work in many ways, and especially this album. I must say that Gainsbourg and his arranger, Jean-Claude Vannier, have developed there such a sophisticated and unique atmosphere that it would have been surprising not to find countless covers and tributes.
As usual some stand out, here are the ones I’m listening to in my Rolls Royce…
Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi – the Gambling Priest
Quakers – the Beginning
Blackjoy – In the Days of Mr Train
Beck – Paper Tiger
Serge Gainsbourg – Cargo Culte
